Aviation ground-handling company PlaneBiz has signed an agreement with Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) to fit out and manage the lounge on behalf of Qantas and its partner airlines.
The Manaia Lounge - which translates as Protector of Land, Sea and Sky in Maori - will cater for up to 75 guests and offer uninterrupted views of Queenstown’s world-famous Remarkables mountain range.
Features will include comfortable and stylish furnishings, dedicated bathrooms, complimentary WiFi, newspapers, hot and cold beverages including bar service, and freshly prepared food.
The lounge will be located on the first floor of the terminal building, replacing the existing Airport Administration office which will move into a new space on the ground floor next to baggage reclaim in mid-May. PlaneBiz will then complete an eight-week fitout and open its doors in time for the region’s peak ski season.
Frank Ryder, Director of PlaneBiz, says the initiative has been driven by strong demand.
"The lounge we operate in Christchurch has been performing extremely well so when Qantas signalled increased commitment to Queenstown we jumped at the chance to provide a similar facility. The icing on the cake will be having one of the best airport views in New Zealand - it will give it a real wow factor.”
QAC CEO Scott Paterson welcomes the move and says the lounge complements the airport’s aim to provide world-class facilities and an outstanding passenger experience.
“With Qantas going daily between Sydney and Queenstown this winter and the new Emirates alliance opening us up to further long-haul markets, we’re delighted to have the opportunity to offer premium facilities to these travellers.
“It will also free up some space in the terminal which will assist with passenger flows and allow us to comfortably host more visitors during our busy winter months.”
