Lake Macquarie – the perfect destination for a romantic weekend away

The kids are back to school and life is starting to return to normal, it’s time for you and your significant other to treat yourselves to a child-free weekend escape.

Lake Macquarie is perfect for a quick couple’s getaway, and is only a 90-minute drive up the M1 from Sydney. This laidback coastal destination has plenty on offer for couples wanting to relax, reconnect and ramp up the romance without being too far from home.

The perfect picnic

There are plenty of parks in Lake Macquarie, all of which are ideal for a scenic picnic and some quality couples time that might be well overdue. One of the most romantic spots on the lake is Pelican Foreshore. This shady paradise is right on the waterfront and has plenty of luscious grass to sprawl out on. With an indulgent cheese platter and bottle of wine (or two!), watch the sunset over the lake and enjoy the water reflecting the spectacular display of the sky at dusk – it’s Lake Mac magic!

If you’re an adventurous pair, grab your hiking boots and heads to the Watagan Mountains. Morning is the perfect time to get outdoors and make the most of your beautiful surroundings. Here you can trek through glorious green rainforest past waterfalls, before unpacking a picnic basket for a well-deserved lunch at Boarding House Dam picnic area.

Bliss beach date

Beach lovers can enjoy each other’s company while exploring Lake Macquarie’s pristine coastline. Choose a patrolled beach for swimming during warmer months, or visit a secluded cove in one of the state conservation areas for a romantic stroll on the sand.

Over on the lake, if you’re up for a challenge, JetBuzz at Cams Wharf has a great range of boats and watercraft to hire. Hire a stand-up paddle board to share – it’s a fun way to explore the lake and if you’ve never tried paddle boarding before, it comes with a laughter guarantee!

Seafood at Sunset

When the day is coming to an end and you find that you’re ready for a delicious meal for two, Lake Macquarie has some sensational waterfront eateries perfect for romantic dinners. Freshly caught seafood and famous Hunter Valley wines are highlights on many local menus. You can choose from fine dining cuisine, Asian, Italian, casual pub fare and much more, depending on your style.

For something extra special, you can’t go past Crusoe’s on the Lake. This overwater dining spot, located within Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, offers some of the best dining views in Belmont coupled with delicious seafood platters including fresh blue swimmer crabs, SA tiger prawns, Sydney rock oysters, lemon pepper squid, panko crumbed prawns and battered sweetlip snapper.

Cosy cottages for couples

Cedar Cottage

Cedar Cottage is an AirBnb gem, perfect for a couple’s retreat with a peaceful calm vibe, just metres from the waterfront of lovely Lake Macquarie. The modern, open plan layout is complete with large windows, a luxurious bathroom, state-of-the-art kitchen, and everything you could ever want for a relaxing, rejuvenating and private break.

Selby Cottage

When it comes to cute and cosy, look no further than Selby Cottage. This stunning waterfront accommodation is one of Lake Macquarie’s original workers cottages. Having undergone a gorgeous makeover, the cottage still retains some of its original charm - making it a sweet spot for a loved-up weekend away.
