Tropical North Queensland Sees Record Tourism Growth

Tropical North Queensland has emerged as the top-performing region in Queensland, achieving record international visitor spend and visitation. In the year to September 2025, international visitor numbers grew by 14.6% to 595,000, driving a record spend of $1.1 billion, an 18.5% increase.

The region's success is attributed to the Federal Government's $15 million Tourism Recovery Program, which enabled Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) to undertake 110 international campaigns in 2024-25.

The United States was the largest international source market, growing by 9.2% to 94,000 visitors, followed by the United Kingdom and New Zealand, which exceeded 2019 figures. China showed the largest growth, increasing by 62.6% to 43,000 visitors. Domestic tourism also showed growth, with expenditure reaching $2.4 billion and overnight visitors totaling 1.39 million.

The region's average spend per visitor was $1657, above Queensland's average of $1082 and Australia's average of $952. TTNQ CEO Mark Olsen credited the region's success to the government's investment in tourism, which delivered an extra 205,000 visitors and supported over 1500 additional jobs in the community.

Key statistics include:

- Visitor nights: 5.8 million, up 19.9%
- Average length of stay: 9.7 nights, up 0.4 nights
