THAI Statement Regarding ICAO USOAP Findings on Thai DCA

THAI's President Mr. Charamporn Jotikasthira
Mr. Charamporn Jotikasthira, THAI President, firmly stated that “THAI places safety first before finances.” No matter the outcome of the ICAO USOAP audits on Thai Department of Civil Aviation (Thai DCA), Thai Airways International (THAI) is committed to delivering the highest safety practices for the flying public. We have been and continue to follow above and beyond the requisite compliance requirements of air safety standards and regulations worldwide.

Regarding the ICAO USOAP findings, while the Thai DCA passed the last ICAO USOAP audit in 2005 with no Significant Safety Concerns (SSC) being issued, the recent audit resulted in findings that attributed to ICAO issuing an SCC. Though the findings are most undesirable, it can be viewed as a positive potential for Thailand in that the USOAP audit results will trigger a leap in improvements in aviation safety monitoring standards. The Royal Thai government is committed to bringing Thai DCA abreast to meet all requirements of aviation industry.

THAI continuously takes an active role in various international governmental and non-governmental safety-related activities, meetings and conferences. THAI also participates in many of the industry's programs alongside manufacturers and other airline experts. These conferences serve to keep THAI's human expertise updated on the latest developments and practices, which in turn are incorporated into THAI operations. THAI continuously reviews and implements safety technologies to operate our flights safely and efficiently, meeting required standards as well as exceeding standards that are required by external authorities.

Regarding the additional safety checks, throughout the past around the world, aviation authorities have been conducting regular safety checks on all airlines, including THAI (as they normally do with all carriers operating to their airports). Today, as a result of the ICAO USOAP findings on Thai DCA, THAI (and other Thai carriers) are being inspected more frequently. But this is normal practice by the aviation authorities and THAI welcomes it, as the results allow THAI to prove our dedication to safety practices.

THAI currently has dedicated a function under the office of the THAI President to immediately address all EC SAFA Ramp Inspection findings, with firm corrective actions and preventive measures being monitored and checked. The CEO himself chairs the SAFA readiness weekly meetings. He also approves and directs all improvements and implementations, and monitors each corrective action closely.

Through all THAI's efforts in the past and currently, THAI would like the travelling public and partner airlines to have confidence in the safety and efficiency of THAI operations. THAI is doing all we can to assure authorities, customers, employees, business alliance and partners, and stakeholders that THAI is deeply committed to meeting compliance above and beyond the required standards and to conform to safety regulations, standards and best practices around the world.

Chiang Mai to get more regional direct flights

Thailand International Balloon Festival is one of the not-to-miss annual events
in Chiang Mai
The northern Thai city of Chiang Mai is welcoming more direct regional flights. Low-cost carrier (LCC) Thai AirAsia launched a new daily direct Chiang Mai-Hong Kong service this week, and announced a plan to launch a Chiang Mai-Hangzhou (China) flight next month (from 21 February, 2014).
AirAsia’s new Hangzhou-Chiang Mai service to start from 21 February, 2014
Thai AirAsia’s new services join the recently launched regional flights from the mainland by Air China, comprising the twice-weekly Wuhan-Chiang Mai starting from 10 December, 2013, and thrice-weekly Beijing-Chiang Mai from 7 November, 2013. (Read more on TAT Newsroom: Air China to Launch Wuhan – Chiang Mai Flights)

The LCC becomes the third airline to operate on the Chiang Mai-Hong Kong route, joining Dragonair and Hong Kong Express Airways, which are already operating on the route. Chiang Mai is also connected to other Chinese cities – Chengdu, Kunming, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Chongqing, as well as Macau – by several other airlines, including Thai AirAsia (Chiang Mai-Macau service).

Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “This is great news for Chiang Mai and the Thai tourism industry. Often known as the Rose of the North, Chiang Mai is also a convenient jumping off point to neighbouring northern Thai provinces, including Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son.

The city is well known for a diversity of cultural and natural attractions, ethnic cultures, and unique Lanna-style traditions in celebrating many Thai festival, including Loi Krathong (known as Yi Peng in Chiang Mai), Songkran and the Khantoke merit-making ceremony. It is also known for the much-hype Thailand International Balloon Festival and the Chiang Mai Fest International Music and Heritage.

THAI Airways in Multi-Tier Push

by Roderick Eime in Bangkok

Thai Airways International President, Mr Sorajak Kasemsuvan, reinforced the international full-service long-hail carrier's intention to expand operations while addressing media at the opening of Incentive Travel and Conventions Meetings Asia (IT&CMA) in Bangkok.

"2013 has been a remarkable and challenging year for THAI, with our management and staff across the company having worked very hard in all areas to improve our product and service standards, as well as developing new markets," said Mr Kasemsuvan.

He reiterated the focus on new destinations such as Sapporo (Japan) for THAI which will increase from four to seven weekly flights as well as wholly owned regional carrier THAI Smile heading to Chonqing and Changsha in China as well as recently announced route to Macau.

A fifth A380 will arrive this month and lift passenger numbers to Narita (Tokyo) while THAI Smile will gain two A320-200s and one B777 aircraft for regional and short-haul international routes. These acquisitions reflect the airline's strategy for meeting expected growth.

Mr. Kasemsuvan also reminded the assembled journalists that THAI Smile will shortly become an entity in its own right with formal approval being granted for corporate separation. The airline will shortly obtain its own two-letter code and staff will no longer rotate between the two airlines. While Mr Kasemsuvan could not confirm the adoption of the Star Alliance or Royal Orchid Plus membership benefits under the new format, he conceded the tie-in was 'probable'.

Although THAI was not currently servicing the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) market directly, Mr Kasemsuvan hinted that co-operation with 49 per cent THAI owned Nok Air was likely to increase in the near future.
