MSC: Is this the future of cruising?

[updated]

Our committed cruiser casts a critical eye over one of the world's most advanced cruise ships, the newly launched MSC flagship, the 6000-passenger Grandiosa. Words: Roderick Eime

We all know the cruise industry has attracted criticism in recent times for some environmentally unsavoury practices. Whether it is the discharge of wastewater, air pollution or overuse of single-use plastics, the global multi-billion-dollar cruise industry certainly has some questions to answer.

I'm here in Hamburg for the very festive launch of MSC Grandiosa, the brand new180,000 GT, 331m flagship of the world's largest privately-owned cruise line. We are fed and refreshed in regal style as this giant ship is welcomed into the world's luxury cruise fleet and screen idol, Sophie Loren, is on hand as usual for the ribbon-cutting in front of the world's travel media and more than 14,000 travel agents.

Sophia Loren is the godmother of MSC's entire cruise fleet (supplied)

But apart from her staggering statistics, the cruise line has integrated some of the latest maritime technology into Grandiosa's design, making her one of the most environmentally friendly such vessels afloat despite her ample proportions.

Grandiosa is the first of three MSC's Meraviglia-Plus ships, all of which employ state-of-the-art exhaust scrubbers to remove 98 per cent of such harmful emissions as sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide. As something of a tech geek, I was impressed to learn that extra catalytic converters (similar to those in your car) turn harmful nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen gas and water.

While most large cruise ships continue to burn Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) at the rate of about 200-250 tonnes per day, others are converting to light marine diesel, a fuel identical to that which we pump into road vehicles. Unlike HFO, it floats and evaporates if spilled and produces much less harmful byproducts when burned. New generation cruise ships currently under construction by MSC and others will employ Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) exclusively, vastly reducing - but not eliminating - emissions.

“Our focus on innovation since we built our first cruise ships only in 2003 ensures that we have one of the most modern fleets at sea as well as one of the highest environmentally performing, “said  Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises executive chairman in a press conference at the launch, “And, thanks to our long-term planning, this will allow us to already achieve a fleet-wide 29 per cent reduction in carbon intensity (rate) by 2024 vs. 2008, well on our way to meet the 40 per cent reduction target set for 2030.”

We don't need to be mathematicians to work out that MSC Cruises will not meet its promised carbon neutral status by January 2020 while continuing to use fossil fuels, so an intensive carbon offset campaign is underway to supercharge their carbon neutrality efforts. Now obviously I haven't audited each of these initiatives, but I can report MSC's stated strategy.

“We will work with leading providers in carbon offsets able to offset CO2 emissions with the highest level of integrity,” said Mr Vago, “Our vision is to also invest in projects that provide quantifiable community benefits, protect the environment and support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

From press materials obtained from MSC and my own independent enquiries, I've been able to find out more about these 'green' mechanisms.

MSC Grandiosa and her environmental features. CLICK TO ENLARGE

No Discharge

One thing I can confidently report is that you won't see any ugly images of MSC ships emptying their bowels into the sea as has been seen elsewhere. All wastewater is processed on board with their Advanced Wastewater Treatment System  (AWTS). The system separates solids that are removed from the cycle and treated separately. This bio 'sludge' is dehydrated and compacted into high-grade ‘pellets’ which can either be burned as a fuel source or offloaded to a certified shore facility. Because of their high-grade organic quality, these soil-like pellets can be added to landfills to enhance composting action or even used as agricultural fertilizer. The reverse osmosis filtered and UV-treated water is close to municipal 'tap' quality and is perfectly safe to return to the sea. I'm told that MSC executives even drank the water in a demonstration of its purity. Wish I'd seen that.

Silent Running

As evidenced by my own experience on board, Grandiosa is a silent ship. This is achieved by isolating and insulating the otherwise noisy machine spaces eg engines, generators etc. The massive engines themselves are mounted on 'silent blocks' and the whole space is insulated with sound deadening material. This not only creates a more comfortable space for guests, but also for marine mammals who are bombarded by ship-generated noise. The propellers too have a bubble generating feature that counters the noise created by propellers at full speed.

Slippery Ship

We've seen several new hull designs appear on the scene recently. MSC's state-of-the-art hydrodynamic hulls are not so much revolutionary, but rather a refinement of existing 'bulbous bow'  design, where computer modelling has helped create the optimum shape that offers the least water resistance or 'drag'. Like in cars and airplanes, a 'slippery' design allows higher speeds without using extra power and hence emissions. The industry standard 'bulbous bow' is that big round protrusion at the front of a ship that sits below the waterline and guides the water around the hull, greatly reducing the engines' effort in propelling the vessel, hence less fuel consumed and less emissions produced. Non-toxic anti-foul paint is also used on the hulls to prevent marine growth build-up.

Power Play

All ships generate their own electricity using generators powered by the same fuel as used by the engines. Obviously, the less work these engines need to do, the more efficient and the cleaner is the whole package. In the case of most modern cruise ships, the main engines are used to generate electricity for the electric motors that drive the propellers. These propellers are housed in massive rotating pods (Azimuth Pods or just 'azipods') beneath the stern that removes the need for old-fashioned rudders and makes the ships much more maneuverable, especially at low speeds when docking. If Titanic had installed azipods, there's a good chance she would have dodged that iceberg!

Other power-saving measures include ultra-low-power LED lighting throughout the ship and intelligent air-conditioning that monitors interior temperatures and redistributes heat instead of regenerating it. The 26 intelligent elevators fascinate me too. You select your floor and the next elevator is indicated. The computer system optimises elevator movements, vastly reducing wait times and minimises unnecessary lift travel.

One of the topical issues with ships in port is their burning fuel while berthed. While most modern ships have the emission controls already discussed, it nevertheless is beneficial if ships can switch off their oil-burning generators while in port. All MSC ships are shore power ready, meaning they can 'plug in' just like you would do with a caravan at a powered site. The problem is, as I've discovered, is that there are only about two dozen ports in the whole world able to offer shore power to cruise ships. This is a complex discussion for another time, but obviously needs to be addressed.

Plastic Fantastic

It seems every day there are heated discussions and finger-pointing in regards to plastic reduction, disposal and recycling. MSC and the other big lines are feeling consumer and regulatory pressure and responding – some more effectively than others. From my own superficial investigations, MSC does not yet have a perfect scorecard, but I'm pleased to report many of the most offensive single-use plastics like straws, cutlery and bottles are almost gone. Almost.

MSC have instituted many procedures to deal with this waste sensitively for example, I was told that the supply chain was intimately examined to identify where waste can be reduced if not eliminated. For example, many of the bulk cleaning liquids and detergents used behind the scenes are now delivered as solid concentrate, eliminating hundreds of tonnes of plastic packaging in one fell swoop.

Sea Change

An artist rendering of Ocean Cay

Of particular note is MSC's concern with the health of the oceans. To this end, they are embarking on projects which protect and restore ocean and coastal habitats while also absorbing more CO2 than current levels. These so-called Blue Credits are earned by dealing directly with the health of our seas and rivers, bearing in mind that the ocean is a very efficient absorbent of atmospheric carbon dioxide, accounting for the absorption of more than one-third of human-caused emissions thus far.

To this end, MSC in conjunction with marine biologists and conservationists, are rejuvenating a derelict sand mining island in the Caribbean, to be called Ocean Cay, turning it into a marine sanctuary that guests can enjoy during their cruise as an enriching shore excursion.

Geek Solutions and Tech Fun

Aboard ship, numerous hi-tech features makes guests' experience more enjoyable including Zoe, the virtual assistant that keeps tabs on your schedule, bill and children; smart elevators that direct you to the next elevator going your way; extensive adults and children's entertainment including a full-size F1 simulator and head-spinning VR games – all of which could easily be the subject of their own feature.

In summary, when you add in superior dining and guest service levels, well-appointed cabins and suites as well as class-leading theatrical shows including the only Cirque du Soleil at Sea, you have very near the perfect combination of features for the best possible cruise experience. But hey, don't take my word for it.

MSC Cruises' Statement Regarding Events in Tunisia

MSC Cruises confirms that its ship MSC Splendida has left the port of La Goulette, Tunis, this morning at 6AM.(19 March)

MSC Splendida received the authorisation from the relevant authorities to leave the port of La Goulette and is heading, as originally scheduled, to Barcelona where it is currently expected to arrive at 9AM on Friday 20 March.

MSC Cruises is present on site with its crises team in order to continue to provide key assistance on the ground to MSC Splendida's guests who were involved in the tragic events and needing assistance.

MSC Cruises Executive Chairman, Pierfrancesco Vago, will be arriving in Tunis in the coming hours in order to make a close assessment of the situation, meet in person as well as arrange to provide assistance to those affected by these tragic events and their relatives and consult with local authorities.

3.15 PM - On 18 March, MSC Splendida called the port of La Goulette, Tunis for its weekly call performed during the season from 17 December 2014 to 15 April 2015. The ship arrived with 3,714 guests and 1,267 crewmembers aboard.

As it is the case every time the ship calls Tunis, a shore excursion offered MSC Cruises' guests the opportunity to visit the famous Bardo National Museum. During the visit at the museum, some of MSC Cruises' guests were caught in the middle of a terrorist attack along with guests from another cruise line.

As soon as the company heard of the attack and the fact that some of its guests were involved this tragedy, regular stringent safety procedures were set in motion and the ship management called for the immediate cancellation of all on-going shore excursions and recall all buses and their passengers on the ground back to the ship. The security on board was also immediately raised to Level 3, its highest, by emergency protocol to ensure complete safety of all guests and crew members – the company's number one priority at all times.

In constant coordination with local, national and international authorities as well as embassies in Tunis and ground staff, MSC Splendida's command worked towards organising the safe return of the ship's guests aboard, and assessing the situation in the city's hospitals. Keeping guests aboard informed of the unfolding of the situation took constant synchronization between all actors aboard and ashore and filtering of the stream of sometimes contradicting information from various sources.

Finally, to allow all guests to promptly contact their families and loved ones at home and to provide reassurance about their wellbeing, all onboard telephony and internet was made available.

In the meantime, only a few hours after the tragic events, MSC Cruises' Crisis Team reached the ship in Tunis and immediately set out to work and started providing assistance and support to guests in this painful moment. MSC Cruises Executive Chairman, Pierfrancesco Vago, will arrive in Tunis in the early hours of 19 March in order to make a close assessment of the situation, also to provide assistance to the victims and their relatives as well as consult with local authorities.

However, these numbers are still subject to modification whilst official identification is on-going.

According to sources it would appear that of the victims, three were of Japanese nationality, two French, two Spanish and two were Colombian one of which having dual nationality Colombian and Australian. The wounded, of which three Japanese nationals, one South African, one Belgian and seven French, are currently being treated in various hospitals. All of them are being assisted in person by members of the MSC Cruises Crisis Team that was immediately sent to Tunis to provide on the ground support.

MSC Cruises will continue to publish updates on any confirmed official information it may receive.

At this tragic time, the MSC Cruises family wishes to extend its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to all those who were affected by this tragic event and are suffering as a result, in particular to the families and friends of those who lost their lives as well as the injured ones.

New extended MSC brochure online

EXCITING EXPERIENCES IN MSC CRUISES' NEW 18-MONTH BROCHURE

An innovative series of pricing categories customised for different experiences is among the many highlights of the MSC Cruises new exciting 18-month online brochure.

It is the first time the major cruise line has launched such a long-term brochure – October 2014 until April 2016.

And to satisfy the needs of the budget conscious clients, the brochure carries an early bird program with savings from $200 per person up to $500 per person for passengers combining two cruises.

With the early bird special, prices for a seven-night Mediterranean cruise will begin at $679 per person, twin share.

The four experiences detailed in the brochure – Bella, Fantastica, Aurea and MSC Yacht – take their names from the current cabin categories and were created to "personalise a cruise holiday further than before."

"We really want to give travellers even more choices regarding their cruises, so that's where our experience pricing comes in," said Lynne Clarke, managing director of MSC Cruises Australia and New Zealand.

"With the ability to choose between 'Bella', 'Fantastica', 'Aurea', and 'MSC Yacht Club' experiences, cruisers are given the opportunity to personalise their holiday even further," she said.

"We urge people to start planning and booking from now considering this remarkable Early bird sale will end 31 August 2014."

Other features of new brochure, launched on Friday, June 6, include the exquisite dining options, the array of onboard entertainment, various cruise fares for families, groups, seniors, singles and the young guests (children under 18 years cruise free when sharing the same cabin with two paying adults).

Information on how to add one or more packages to the cruise, including an excursion packages as well packages for onboard drinks, spa and hotel selection before or after the cruise is also included.

MSC Cruises has also doubled the number of Grand Mediterranean cruises which combine two cruises and offer the free land transfer from Venice to Genoa or vice versa.

In addition, for the first time the Grand Mediterranean can also be 22-night cruise, from Venice or Genoa, with the free land transfer included in the price, allowing passengers to explore such hot spots as Istanbul, Santorini, Kotor, Dubrovnik, Piraeus, Marseille, Barcelona, Tunis, Sicily and more.

Demand for cruising with MSC Cruises is greater than ever before with the popular family cruise line recently signing an agreement with Italian ship-building company Fincantieri for an additional two ships with an option of a third ship, the value of the project €2.1 billion ($AUD3.2 billion).

The two new ships will strengthen the cruise line's global standing and lead the way for a new generation of cruise ships to be "completely different from an architectural point of view".

The first of the new megaships will be delivered in November 2017, the second in May 2018, each measuring 323 metres long by 41 metres wide with a height of 70 metres, catering for up to 5300 passengers in 2070 cabins.

This latest development came in the wake of MSC Cruises' signing of a two-ship order with STX France, with deliveries in 2017 and 2019. In addition, Fincantieri has begun work on "stretching" the first of four ships in the Lirica class (MSC Armonia) thus increasing each of these ship's capacity by 200 cabins.

MSC orders two new megaships

MSC Cruises has increased its order for new megaships by signing an agreement with Italian ship-building company Fincantieri for an additional two ships with an option for a third, the value of the project €2.1 billion ($AUD3.2 billion).

The two new ships, to be built at €700 million each, will strengthen the cruise line’s global standing and lead the way for a new generation of cruise ships to be “completely different from an architectural point of view”.

In signing the new deal, Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises, said: "Today, MSC Cruises adds the last piece to its new industrial plan that will allow us to double the capacity of our fleet by 2022. With the arrival of the new ships we will reach a capacity of about 80,000 passengers a day.”

The first of the new megaships will be delivered in November 2017, the second in May 2018.

Measuring 323 metres long by 41 metres wide with a height of 70 metres, each new ship will have a gross tonnage of 154,000 tonnes, catering for up to 5300 passengers in 2070 cabins.

This latest development follows MSC Cruises’ recent signing of a two-ship order with STX France, with deliveries in 2017 and 2019. In addition, Fincantieri has begun work on “stretching” the first of four ships in the Lirica class (MSC Armonia) thus increasing each of these ship’s capacity by 200 cabins.

Lynne Clarke, managing director of MSC Cruises Australia and New Zealand, said the latest order was further proof of the cruise line’s positive steps towards capturing a larger share of the growing global cruise market.

“This comes as exciting news not only for us but for our Australian and New Zealand customers,” she said. “We are entering a new era in cruising.”

The signing took place at the Palazzo Chigi in Rome between MSC Cruises and Fincantieri.

There for the signing were the Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises Pierfrancesco Vago, the CEO of MSC Cruises Gianni Onorato, and the CEO of Fincantieri, Giuseppe Bono.

"From the moment we started talking with Fincantieri, we had in mind to design and build two completely new ships, revolutionary in their structure, unlike anything that exists on the market today," said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises.

"Seaside is a futuristic prototype because of its structure, shape and versatility. It will be a real revolution in the world’s cruise market, an excellent product for its unique and innovative architectural features and cutting-edge technology.”

The Seaside prototype presents unique features such as a sea-level promenade that circumnavigates the sides of the ship with outdoor spaces, shops and restaurants. In addition, Seaside will also feature a splendid and spacious theatre, a terraced balcony and panoramic lifts with sea views.

Furthermore, the ship will boast numerous technological innovations that will, among other things, further reduce fuel consumption by 25% and advanced safety systems that go beyond what is required by international regulation.

New MSC ships will be the biggest cruise ships ever built by a European ship owner

MSC CRUISES AND STX FRANCE SIGN A LETTER OF INTENT FOR TWO PROTOTYPE CRUISE SHIPS

The most versatile cruise ships of the world due for delivery in 2017 and 2019

PARIS, 20 March 2014 – Today MSC Cruises signed a letter of intent (LOI) with STX France for the construction of two new cruise ships, with an option for two more. The two ships will join MSC Cruises’ fleet, currently counting 12 ships, all built in the Saint-Nazaire yards. The signature took place at the Hôtel de L’Industrie, in Paris in the presence of Gianluigi Aponte, President of MSC group, Laurent Castaing, General Manager of STX France and Pierre Moscovici, French Minister of Economy and Finance. Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, and Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises were also in attendance.

“Growth and development have always been the characteristics that have defined MSC since the very beginning of our journey into the world of cruising. The launch of this prototype and the building of these two new ships confirm our commitment to further growth and to further development. MSC Cruises will expand its capacity by 31%: we will incredibly enrich our offer on board and we will broaden our horizons to ensure we meet the growing global demand in every region” said MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago. “Once again our longstanding partnership with the STX yard has proved key for these plans”.

“We are really proud of building this new generation of ships for MSC Cruises, a long-time appreciated partner. We invested a lot of R&D and design efforts to make sure that MSC Cruises’ new flagship would truly be unmatched. The latest commercial negotiation was particularly challenging in the light of today’s global competitive landscape in the shipbuilding industry. I would like to point out that the competitiveness agreement signed with our trade unions has been decisive to reach this LOI signature” said Laurent Castaing, STX France General Manager.

The two units are due for delivery respectively in 2017 and 2019. 315 metres long and 43 metres wide, with a gross tonnage of about 167,600 tons, boasting 2,250 cabins for guests, nearly 820 crew cabins, and accommodating 5,700 passengers and 1,536 crew members.

“The new prototype will be the biggest cruise ship ever built by a European ship owner and the most versatile and flexible of the world: not only will it be able to call in most of the ports and destinations on earth, without compromise, but it will have extraordinary features that will make it the perfect choice at sea, in summer and in winter. The two new ships will reaffirm MSC Cruise’s dedication to outstanding and genuine dining options and out-of-this-world entertainment with new panoramic spaces, a bigger theatre and a spectacular amusement park connected to an outdoor aqua park as well as a two-deck “inside promenade” explained Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises.

Among the new features of the ships there will be specially designed cabins for families and an “extended” MSC Yacht Club, the entirely self-contained private club on the prestigious foredecks that will now be completed with a vast solarium, a private lounge and restaurant and duplex suites.

The new prototype is the result of a long development process, conducted in the framework of STX’s ECORIZON ® programme, leading to the creation of a new generation of ships that are cleaner, more efficient and more technological. They will be water emission free, while its hull and propulsion system will be optimised for better energy efficiency. The installation of scrubbers will allow for fumes to be neutralised and CO2 emissions to be in accordance with the latest evolutions of international maritime regulations.

The contract signed is worth 16 million working hours for STX France and its subcontractors, 9 million for the prototype and 7 for the second unit. Building is due to start in spring 2015.

The contract will be binding when the financial package is secured.

MSC Cruises new #Medwayoflife video series

MSC Fantasia

A new MSC Cruises’ video series based on the company’s dedication to the “Mediterranean Way of Life” has made its debut on MSC Cruises' digital universe.

From the company’s YouTube channel to the websites and Facebook pages, from the Twitter accounts, to the Instagram page, Google+ or Pinterest boards, the video highlights MSC Cruises’ belief that life shouldn’t be measured by the minutes we experience, but by the moments we enjoy .

The series, also on show on board the MSC fleet, was inspired by MSC’s unique Mediterranean spirit and roots, the campaign taking the form of six one-minute videos each depicting a distinctive value of the MSC Cruise experience.

The #MEDWAYOFLIFE campaign aims at reminding and encouraging viewers to celebrate the memory-making and timeless experience that awaits MSC travellers: the freedom to be oneself and do what pleases; the Mediterranean touch of the many aspects of life on-board; the real-life social network that a cruise is; the discovery aspect of cruising, where every day is a new journey bringing to many places, people and cultures in one voyage; the value of taking the time to enjoy the present, letting the instant command one’s next moves; and finally, the unique and thrilling privilege of viewing the world from the sea.

Firmly grounded in what MSC Cruises does and why, the video series provides a glimpse into the essence of an MSC travel: that special connection to the sea, that magic instant when land emerges from the horizon, the joyful meeting of tastes, the enjoyment of letting time casually drift by, the slow harmony that everyday life may have lost, the idea that if the world is a magical theatre, we should have a front-row seat. The series of short films was shot on board MSC Preziosa. It was directed by Gianluca Bomben and produced by Carlo Concina. The production was realised by Milan-based production company ON AIR and Emilio Giliberti was the Photography Director of the series.

Experience A Pilgrimage To Medjugorje During MSC Armonia's Historical Journeys

This summer, MSC Armonia will be delving into the mind of the Mediterranean, uncovering ancient and architectural treasures on a stimulating tour of philosophical thought and the birthplace of western civilization.

From June 7 through November 1, 2013, MSC Armonia will be sailing from Venice, Italy for a series of 8-day/7-night cultural and historical cruises around the eastern Mediterranean calling in Ancona in Italy, Dubrovnik in Croatia, Corfu, Gythion and Kefalonia in Greece and Kotor in Montenegro.

As a complement to the many historical and cultural day trips on offer, MSC Cruises has just added a new shore excursion: an unforgettable day trip from Dubrovnik to the beautiful, small town of Medjugorje in Bosnia. Medjugorje acquired global popularity as a religious pilgrimage site in 1981 after news broke that the Virgin Mary had appeared to six local Catholics.  Today, it is recognized by many as one of Europe's holiest places given its history of reported religious apparitions.  More than a million believers make pilgrimages each year to this renowned site.  Designed to include an extra-long call in Dubrovnik each Sunday, MSC Armonia's updated itinerary gives travelers the chance to visit Medjugorje and spend a day in spiritual reflection, while exploring the history of this intriguing site.

On a panoramic drive along the lovely Adriatic coastline, travelers enjoying this unique day trip can explore Medjugorje's key attractions, including St. James' Church, the statue of St. Leopold, and various impressive bronze plaques illustrating the mysteries of the rosary adorning the stony path up to Apparition Hill. Travelers can visit with an informative guide or take time to reflect and appreciate the mystical atmosphere of such an extraordinary place.

Other highlights of MSC Armonia's rich itinerary include the trove of historical treasures that is ancient Ancona, the spectacular natural beauty of the island of song Corfu and the unspoiled fishing village of Gythion, the perfect gateway from which to discover the town of Sparta and venture into the very heart of Greek identity. Travelers will also be enthralled by the setting ofLouis de Berniere 's best-selling novel 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Kefalonia, the stunning old Mediterranean port and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor, and the romance and architectural splendours of Venice.

MSC Cruises to become the world’s third largest cruise line

Inline images 1

The much anticipated launch this month of the MSC Preziosa will push MSC Cruises into the world's third spot for passenger capacity.

It will be the first time the family-owned cruise line has reached such a high position, closing in on first and second placeholders Carnival Cruises and Royal Caribbean International with an annual capacity of 1.45 million guests across its 12 ships.

"We see it as a very significant milestone," said Lynne Clarke, managing director of MSC Cruises Australia and New Zealand.

"When you consider MSC Cruises is a family owned company, it's a great achievement to be positioned so high against such public listed corporations," she said

"MSC Cruises has come such a long way since launching the first cruise ship, the now decommissioned MSC Melody, in 1997.

"In fact, since 2003, we have had an exciting time launching another 11 ships with the MSC Preziosa, about to be officially unveiled."

The newcomer, to be the fourth member of the cruise line's ever-expanding Fantasia class, will be christened by the MSC Cruises' godmother, screen legend Sophia Loren, in a gala event in the Italian port of Genoa on Saturday, March 23.

The delivery of the MSC Preziosa will see MSC Cruises increase passenger capacity to 1.45 million on 12 ships this year, a 9.4 percent capacity increase over 2012, leaving such cruise lines as Costa Crociere, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line in its wake.

MSC Cruises' "bronze medal" ranking is based on data received from the 2013 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.

By market, MSC Cruises is expected to have over 50 per cent of its capacity in the Mediterranean, 14 per cent in South America, 12.5 percent in Northern Europe, and the remainder in Africa, the Caribbean, Canary Islands and Red Sea.

TRADITIONAL COIN CEREMONY MARKS MILESTONE IN MSC PREZIOSA CONSTRUCTION

MSC PREZIOSA
MSC Preziosa

Genoa to host christening ceremony in March 2013

In time-honoured maritime tradition, a ceremony was held at the STX shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, during which two commemorative coins were welded to MSC Preziosa’s mast radar, marking a significant construction milestone.

Following the termination of the agreement with the original owner earlier this year, MSC Cruises signed a contract to take over the 140,000-tonne cruise ship.

And long before the ship is launched, bookings have been swift in the Australian and New Zealand markets, particularly on MSC Preziosa’s Grand Mediterranean combos with sister-ship, MSC Fantasia.

Renamed MSC Preziosa, she will be the 13th addition to the MSC Cruises’ fleet, as well as the precious fourth ship in the series of Fantasia class ships.

"I am delighted to celebrate this important milestone in the construction of MSC Preziosa, the beautiful ship who will complete our celebrated Fantasia class,” said MSC Cruises CEO Pierfrancesco Vago, opening the ceremony.

“She will raise our total capacity to over 40,000 berths and, joining her sister ships MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida and MSC Divina, will allow us to offer the unparalleled features of this new generation of ship all over the world,” he said.

”While marking this occasion, I am also glad to officially announce that MSC Preziosa will be christened on 23 March in Genoa, Italy, one of the our most visited and best loved destinations, and her first homeport for 2013."

Laurent Castaing, General Manager of STX France, added, "I would like to take the opportunity of this new ceremony to congratulate both the MSC Cruises and STX teams for their joint commitment. Some impressive shipbuilding figures illustrate the ambition which is at the heart of the Fantasia class project: 30,000 tonnes of steel, 2000 km of cables, 1751 passenger cabins and, at the present moment, 1000 people working every day on MSC Preziosa. It is STX's ambition to support MSC to become the European leader in the cruise market. "

The honour of presenting the coins fell to MSC Cruises Head of Onboard Marketing Daniela Picco, who served as MSC godmother during the ceremony. She was joined by Jeannette Le Queau from STX France, who works closely with the MSC team and has been involved in the MSC story since the first new build orders arrived at Saint-Nazaire just under ten years ago.

The gold coin from STX bears the well-known image of Louis Oscar Roty’s La Semeuse, a sower moving forward with her bag of grain, which was depicted on French coins until the arrival of the euro. MSC’s coin bears the company logo on one side and the cross of Genoa’s ancient coins on the other.

Genoa was an obvious choice to celebrate the new ship's arrival. The city has been an MSC Cruises homeport since the start of the company’s expansion programme in 2003 and has shown a keen understanding of the major economic impact that the cruise sector, and MSC in particular, brings to its port and the region.

Next year MSC will be deploying nine ships from the port and, over the course of the year, nearly 930,000 passengers will embark, disembark or transit during a total of over 200 calls.

MSC Cruises is also heavily investing in the city. The MSC Group’s catering subsidiary MSC Italcatering headquarters are based in Genoa, and the group is also building the new “Towers of San Benigno” office block, a building that will bring all of MSC’s different departments active in the city under one roof, modifying the city skyline forever.

MSC Preziosa is 333 metres long, 38 metres wide, and weighs 140,000 tonnes. The 4,345 guest luxury cruise ship is able to travel up to 23 knots, offering smooth cruising in sumptuous surroundings. Her elegant design is, once again, the work of award-winning naval architects De Jorio Design International.

MSC Preziosa will also take the MSC Yacht Club to new heights. Devised as an entirely self-contained private club area on the foredecks of the ship, the MSC Yacht Club has become a benchmark of exclusive travel since first launched on MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida and MSC Divina. With its sweeping sea views, butler serviced superior suites, dedicated restaurant, pool, solarium, panoramic lounge, private decks and private lift access to the MSC Aurea Spa, the trend-setting concept is a distinguished sanctuary for guests seeking peace, privacy and exclusivity but with access to all that large cruise ships offer.

MSC Cruises is the market leading cruise company in the Mediterranean, South Africa and Brazil and operates across the globe. MSC Cruises sails throughout the year in the Mediterranean and offers a wide range of seasonal itineraries in Northern Europe, the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean, the French Antilles, South America, South and West Africa, and the Red Sea. Its modern fleet comprises twelve ships: Fantasia-class MSC Divina, MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia; Musica-class MSC Magnifica, MSC Poesia, MSC Orchestra, and MSC Musica; Lirica-class MSC Sinfonia, MSC Armonia, MSC Opera and MSC Lirica; and MSC Melody. In 2013 the fleet will once again increase in size with the addition of MSC Preziosa, who will be christened in March. MSC Cruises is the only company in the world to receive the "6 Golden Pearls" award from the Bureau Veritas in recognition of its high level of quality management and environmental responsibility. MSC has also achieved ISO 9001 and ISO 22000 certification for the quality and food safety of all aspects of its catering, both on shore and on board. MSC Cruises believes that global leadership brings increased responsibility towards the physical and human environments in which it operates. As such, a long term partnership with UNICEF was undertaken in 2009 to fund a community project aimed at providing disadvantaged children in Brazil with a quality education. So far, MSC Cruises has raised over one million euros for the initiative.

MSC CRUISES MAKES ONLINE BOOKINGS SIMPLER

Making a booking for a cruise couldn’t be simpler.

That’s the latest news from MSC Cruises which has just improved its “Find a Cruise” booking section on the website.

In tune with today’s online consumer needs, the leading cruise line has created for its website – www.msccruises.com.au - clearer maps and wider search parameters to narrow or widen a client’s choice of cruise ship and cruise itinerary.

Furthermore, the booking section highlights the best available prices.

“Clients will have 24 hours-a-day access, perfect for those with a busy life trying to juggle work with leisure time,” said Lynne Clarke, managing director of MSC Cruises Australia and New Zealand.

“The recent upgrade to the system introduced in July last year makes it even simpler to book,” she said. “You will be able to select your preferred stateroom with little fuss.

“And if you find a cruise page you like, MSC Cruises have added buttons to Facebook and Twitter so you can keep these pages at your finger tips or share with friends.”

MSC Cruises, which increased its fleet to 12 this year with the launch in Marseille, France, of the MSC Divina, boasts an extensive program of cruises in the Mediterranean as well as in Northern Europe, the Caribbean, South America, South Africa and the Red Sea.

A series of Grand Voyages between continents are also included in the 2012-2013.

Good news for families – children under 18 years cruise free all year round (pay only port charges) when sharing a cabin with their parents.

On March 23, 2013, the fleet will expand to 13 with the launch of the MSC Preziosa.

The newcomer will take its MSC Yacht Club to new heights with its sweeping sea view, butler serviced superior suites, dedicated restaurant, pool, solarium, panoramic lounge, private decks and private lift access to the MSC Aurea Spa.

Devised as an entirely self-contained private club area on the foredecks of the ship, the MSC Yacht Club has become a benchmark of exclusive travel since first launched on MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida and MSC Divina. It is a trend-setting concept, a distinguished sanctuary for guests seeking peace, privacy and exclusivity but with access to all that large cruise ships offer.

MSC CRUISES TO LAUNCH “GODDESS” DIVINA

A defining feature of MSC Divina is the redesign of the Infinty/Garden

The latest addition to the MSC Cruises ever-expanding fleet – MSC Divina – will boast a mythological Greek influence when it is launched in France in May, 2012.

Thirteen of the new luxury ship's 18 decks will be named after the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece, among them Aphrodite, the Olympian goddess of love, and Apollo, the Olympian god of music.

Zeus, the king of gods and ruler of Mt Olympus, will also have a deck named after him along with Uranus, god of the heavens.

Furthermore, MSC Divina's expansive 1603-seat theatre will be named the Pantheon, a Greek word aptly meaning "to honour all gods".

"We are truly looking forward to the much-anticipated launch and naming of the MSC Divina, the 12th valued member of our fleet," said Lynne Clarke, managing director of MSC Cruises Australia and New Zealand.

"Every new ship MSC builds is exciting and with our 12th build it will take us to new heights," she said. "We are thrilled to offer another superb class of ship for sale to the Australian New Zealand market. The fact that MSC Divina will be cruising the beautiful East Mediterranean is a bonus as capacity has always been at a premium to this part of the Mediterranean."

After its maiden six-night Mediterranean May 27 cruise from Marseille to Venice, the MSC Divina will take on a series of seven-night Eastern Mediterranean round cruises from Venice to Italy's Bari, Greece's Katakolon, Turkey's Izmir and Istanbul and Croatia's Dubrovnik, such cruises priced from $939 per person twin share.

Despite its ancient Greek influences, MSC Divina is very much a contemporary addition to the cruise line's fleet. However, finding a suitable name wasn't as straight forward.

Originally named Fantastica, the family-owned Italian company looked to the cruise line's famous godmother, glamorous screen legend Sophia Loren, a family friend of MSC president Gianluigi Aponte, before deciding on a change.

"In an evening chat with our president, Sophia said it was her dream to have a ship named after her," said Mrs Clarke. "He immediately suggested 'Divina' in place of 'Fantastica', adding that a 'fantastic experience is fleeting, whereas a divine experience gives you memories that will last forever'. A new name was born," she revealed.

MSC Divina will be the centre of attention in the French port of Marseille on Saturday, May 26, when Ms Loren makes a special appearance at the gala event to "christen" the ship with the traditional smashing across the bow of a bottle of champagne.

Measuring the length of more than three football fields, MSC Divina will be the third member in MSC Cruises' Fantasia class, joining MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia, also christened by the famous Italian actor.

A defining feature of MSC Divina is the redesign of the Infinty/Garden at 7.35 metres wide and 7.60 metres in length, the infinity edge pool will allow clients to experience a spectacular view of the sea from the ship's stern.

The multi-million dollar newcomer will also have more cabins and suites (1751) than its predecessors (1637) and will herald a state-of-the-art concept in design and unprecedented comfort with as many as 1125 cabins offering balconies, while of the 97 suites, 69 will be dedicated to MSC Yacht Club over decks 12, 15 and 16.

MSC Divina's Yacht Club – the "ship within a ship" for passengers seeking to be pampered in elegant surrounds – is renowned for its priority check-in and butler service. Along with the designer suites, it will have an exclusive restaurant with free seating for guests for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments in the restaurant as well as in your mini bars.

A sun deck with exclusive pool, whirlpool baths and solarium, a Top Sail Lounge (open all day) and private lift to the lavish MSC Aurea (day) Spa which will accommodate 48 guests are also a part of the exclusive area of the ship.

"In more ways than one, our latest addition to MSC Cruises will live up to its name," said Mrs Clarke.

MSC Cruises is the world's leading cruise company in the Mediterranean, South African and Brazilian markets and operates across the globe. Its modern fleet comprises eleven ships: MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia (the largest ships ever built for a European ship owner), MSC Poesia, MSC Orchestra, MSC Musica, MSC Sinfonia, MSC Armonia, MSC Opera, MSC Lirica and MSC Melody. MSC Magnifica, the newest ship, was launched in March 2010. The fleet cruises year-round in the Mediterranean and seasonally in Northern Europe, the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean, North America and Canada, South America, the Indian Ocean and South and West Africa. MSC Cruises is the only company in the world to receive the "6 Golden Pearls" award from the Bureau Veritas in recognition of its high level of quality management and environmental responsibility. MSC has also achieved ISO 9001 and ISO 22000 certification for the quality and food safety of all aspects of its catering, both onshore and onboard. MSC Cruises cares about the welfare of children, and as a responsible market leader believes in making a positive impact in the regions where it operates. To this end, the company recently formed a partnership with UNICEF to fund a community project aimed at providing disadvantaged children in Brazil with a quality education.

MSC DONATES $NZ1 MILLION TOWARDS MARITIME CLEANUP

Deeply concerned and saddened by the New Zealand accident involving container ship Rena, the Mediterranean Shipping Company is to donate $NZ1 million towards the clean up in the Bay of Plenty.

The goodwill gesture comes in the light of the environmental and economic damage such an incident would have on the Bay of Plenty region.

"We are deeply concerned about, and saddened by, the environmental damage, economic impact and disruption to lives caused by the accident involving the Rena," said Kevin Clarke, managing director of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (Australia and New Zealand).

"We acknowledge the distress and concerns of local residents, businesses and individuals, as well as those with cargo aboard the vessel," he said.

"Our own staff in Tauranga are part of the local community, and are as concerned about the grounding and its implications as everyone else in the Bay of Plenty - and throughout New Zealand."

In speaking of his concerns and the generous donation to accompany them, Mr Clarke emphasised that MSC did not own the Rena.

Furthermore, Mr Clarke said his company did not employ the ship's crew and was not responsible for the maintenance and operation of the vessel.

"From the outset we have been working behind the scenes with the authorities, including Maritime New Zealand and Ports of Tauranga," he said.

"We have put our resources at their disposal and have been in constant contact with the Rena's owners Costamare," Mr Clarkes added.

"At our meeting with the Minister of Transport yesterday (Monday, Oct 17) we discussed other ways in which we might support the cleaning operation.

"Today (Tuesday, Oct 18), we thus want to put at disposal of the relevant authorities NZ$1 million as a voluntary donation.

"We also would like to thank the professionals and the dedicated volunteers who are helping and spearheading the cleaning."
