Vivid Sydney 2020 Cancelled

The NSW Government today announced the cancellation of Vivid Sydney 2020 following recommendations by the Federal Government and health authorities to limit non-essential organised gatherings to less than 500 people to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Destination NSW said that while the cancellation of the event is disappointing and another major setback for the tourism industry, it is the right thing to do to control the spread of infection and keep people safe.

“Vivid Sydney is a bright star of Sydney’s event calendar so the decision to cancel was not taken lightly. As the event owner, we must follow the advice of health officials to ensure the health and safety of our citizens and everyone involved with Vivid Sydney,” a Destination NSW spokesperson said.

“We have taken the decision early in consideration of those planning to travel to Sydney for the festival, our commercial partners, artists, and volunteers so as to minimise the disruption and impact on them.

“We are currently working through the full implications of the cancellation and will provide further information and advice as soon as it’s available.

“It’s been an incredibly tough time for the tourism industry and this is yet another body blow, but NSW will bounce back and Vivid Sydney will shine brighter than ever in 2021.”

Vivid Sydney, the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere, was scheduled to run from 22 May - 13 June 2020. The cancellation means that all elements of ‘Vivid Sydney - Lights, Music and Ideas’ will not proceed in 2020.

Vivid Sydney debuted in 2009 and is owned, managed and produced by Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency. In 2019 a record 2.4 million people attended Vivid Sydney, generating $172 million for the NSW economy.

Share the Love to Show the Love #LoveNSW

NSW's Tourism Recovery Campaign With Heart

The recovery of NSW's tourism industry from the effects of drought and bushfires is in everyone's hands with Destination NSW today launching its new marketing campaign, Now's The Time To Love NSW.

A rally cry to stay 'local', buy 'local' and post photos and videos of our favourite places with the hashtag #LoveNSW, the social media-led marketing campaign will utilise user-generated content to encourage Australians to get away and give back.

Getting involved is simple; visit our charming country towns and vibrant cities, enjoy our many natural wonders, and post imagery of the experience on social media framed by hands in the shape of a love heart.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said that the new campaign was focused on reminding travellers about all the amazing experiences on offer in Australia's number one holiday destination.

“The prolonged drought and unprecedented bushfires have broken our hearts and had a devastating impact on thousands of operators in our beautiful state,” Minister Ayres said.

“That's why now's the time to love NSW – we need to show the world that our many spectacular sights and experiences are in great shape, and they're welcoming visitors right now,” Ayres said.

Joining the #LoveNSW movement is easy:

  1. Take a #RecoveryWeekend in NSW
  2. Capture a photo in an iconic and inspiring NSW location, framed by your hands in a heart shape
  3. Share the photo on social media with the hashtag #LoveNSW

Goulburn Australia unveils new Destination Guide

#VisitNSW

The 2020 Goulburn Australia Destination Guide was officially unveiled at an exclusive after-hours industry event, held at the Goulburn Visitor Information Centre on Wednesday, 18th December 2019.

The Guide has been designed to complement the new Goulburn Australia destination website – www.goulburnaustralia.com.au – which was officially launched on the same night.

Featuring fresh new imagery and copy, both assets provide visitors, new residents and locals with a comprehensive and definitive guide to Goulburn and the wider Tablelands region.

Acting Team Leader Marketing, Andri Parlett, who oversaw the project, is excited to see the Destination Guide come to fruition.

"This is the most extensive edition ever produced for the Goulburn region. We have introduced four new sections: Family Fun, Wellness, Occasions, as well as a Canberra Region Tablelands section; and have included more contemporary imagery than ever before to create the feeling of a premium country lifestyle magazine."

"A new Goulburn CBD map has been included, as well as an updated City map with complete street index. Another new element is utilising symbols to indicate which accommodation properties are pet-friendly and accessible within the 'Stay' section".

The Destination Guide is an essential marketing tool that is used daily by visitors and potential new residents, and it is often the bridge between budding interest and taking action. It assists in decision-making and planning by providing information on the wide range of experiences and services available in and around Goulburn.

Council's Marketing and Events Unit will distribute 90,000 copies of the Guides over the next two years. The publication is also available online at www.goulburnaustralia.com.au.

This official guide to the region is always in demand, being distributed at around 60 other NSW Accredited Visitor Information Centres and local and regional tourism operators, as well as through direct requests from consumers received as a result of Council's destination marketing campaigns.

Boxes of Destination Guides are also now available for collection from the Goulburn Visitor Information Centre.

Plan Your Vivid Sydney Visits – Don't Miss Any of the Colour and Creativity

Vivid Sydney Lights On is just one day away, and the final touches are in progress as dozens of light art installations and projections are completed across the city.

From 6pm tomorrow evening, Sydney will shine bright and guests are reminded to plan their visit to make the most of the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said there were great options for all people including families, youth, the elderly and people with disability.

“Vivid Sydney is incredibly popular and last year 2.25 million people attended across the 23 days and nights of the festival,” Mr Ayres said.
“With guests of all demographics, nationalities and abilities visiting Sydney for this event, it's important that everyone is considerate and enjoys the sense of community throughout the CBD and nearby precincts.

“Vivid Sydney is on every night from May 24 to June 15, and we encourage visitors to be mindful of popularity on weekends. Some people may consider coming to the city Monday to Wednesday nights for a more relaxed atmosphere, while others could choose to visit Taronga Zoo, Chatswood and Luna Park north of the Harbour for family-friendly activities with parking available.

“Visiting over several days is another great option, and all planning should start via the Vivid Sydney website for transport details, road closures and highlights across the program.”

Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said public transport was the best way to get to Vivid Sydney.
“There are 5,000 additional public transport services available to visitors during Vivid Sydney to help get guests to and from the festival,” Mr Constance said.

“Police, Transport and event organisers work side-by-side to ensure the event runs as smoothly as possible so attendees can travel safely to and from Vivid Sydney precincts.”

Sydney Secures Tennis ATP Cup Finals

Sydney has secured the finals matches of a major new global event to launch the tennis season, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Cup, hailing a new era in men's tennis to commence from 2020.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the NSW Government had won the hosting rights for the ATP Cup finals matches until 2022 and would also host group matches alongside other Australian cities.

"Our city offers excellent facilities, first class hospitality and has a proud track record of hosting major tennis events," Mr Marshall said.

"This is another coup for our State, not only for athletes and sporting fans but the wider NSW community who are set to win from the estimated $36.5 million injection into our local economy.

"I'm proud of NSW's exceptional capability to host blockbuster events that are lucrative, entertaining and ensure we're the envy of our interstate rivals.

"We're building a world-class calendar of events to drive tourism across NSW and put more heads on hotel beds, diners in our restaurants and shoppers in our boutiques."

Following the recent announcement that Ken Rosewall Arena (pic above) at the Olympic Tennis Centre will receive a $50.5 million upgrade, Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government is committed to working with Tennis Australia and Tennis NSW to deliver an outstanding event.

"The NSW Government has made a commitment to bid for 10 World Cups for the next decade and we're well on our way to reaching our goal only six months after embarking on our ambitious target," Mr Ayres said.

"Tennis continues to form the cornerstone of our country's sporting landscape, capturing the hearts and minds of sport fans each summer and attracting international spectators to our locally-hosted matches.

"I look forward to welcoming tennis greats to our State for the ATP Cup group and finals matches that will no doubt provide a sensational showcase of sport and opportunity for NSW to shine on the world stage."

Tennis Australia Chief Executive Officer Craig Tiley said, "With more than 100 players from 24 nations vying for $22 million in prize money and 750 ATP ranking points, the ATP Cup will help us launch the global tennis season every January in Australia."
