The 10-room South Coast property has been reworked as a mid-century-inspired boutique motel, with new guest facilities, a licensed café and rates starting from $239 a night.

Dolphins Motel has reopened near Mollymook Beach following a full redesign aimed at repositioning the former roadside property as a boutique coastal stay.

The project was led by a local family with architectural input from Lukin Design, interiors by Studio Aquilo and branding by Swell Design Group. The updated property combines mid-century Californian influences with Australian coastal design.

The motel has 10 Retro King Studios, each with a private terrace and kitchenette. Rooms include Smeg appliances, Dyson hair dryers, clothes steamers, St. Ali coffee, T2 tea and Leif bathroom products.

Interior finishes include Portuguese cork flooring, terrazzo surfaces, locally made cabinetry and custom bedheads, alongside furniture and fittings from Australian and international design brands. Guests also receive welcome hampers featuring products from South Coast suppliers.

General manager Paul Goodenough, formerly of Bannisters Mollymook, said the redesign was intended to reflect the town’s beach culture and relaxed pace.

“Dolphins Motel has been designed to reflect that,” Goodenough said. “It’s relaxed and unpretentious, but every detail has been carefully considered.”

Facilities include a landscaped swimming pool, complimentary cruiser bikes, soft-top surfboards, table tennis and two Porsche electric-vehicle chargers. A four-metre illuminated roadside sign has also been installed as part of the motel’s new identity.

The property additionally offers a three-bedroom apartment designed for families and longer stays. It includes a double-sided fireplace, custom furniture and a private outdoor entertaining deck with a barbecue.

Dolly’s Café, a licensed venue operated by local hospitality partners Riley Salisbury and Sam Roberts, forms part of the redevelopment. Open daily, it serves coffee, smoothies, breakfast dishes, salads, local wine and craft beer. Food and drinks can also be delivered to guest rooms or the pool area.

Dolphins Motel is about three-and-a-half hours’ drive from Sydney and just over two hours from Canberra.

Winter rates start from $239 midweek and $359 on Friday and Saturday nights for a Retro King Studio. The three-bedroom apartment starts from $478 midweek and $718 on weekends.

Summer rates begin at $330 midweek and $519 on Friday and Saturday nights for a Retro King Studio. Apartment rates start from $660 midweek and $1,038 on weekends.
