Fiji Airways to be first oneworld connect partner

Introducing oneworld connect - a new way for airlines to link to the world's premier alliance

·      Fiji Airways to be first oneworld connect partner
·      Talks progressing with other carriers from around the world

oneworld today launches a new platform for linking up to the world's premier airline alliance – enabling customers to enjoy more services and benefits across an even more extensive global network.

The first airline to join in the new capacity as a oneworld connect partner will be Fiji Airways.

A date will be announced in due course for when Fiji Airways will start offering oneworld connect services and benefits (see below).  Meantime, it is business as usual.

oneworld connect is the first new membership platform unveiled by oneworld since the alliance was originally announced 20 years ago.

oneworld is in discussion with other carriers interested in participating in the programme, from various parts of the world including the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

Each oneworld connect partner will need to have a minimum of three oneworld members as its sponsors to be initiated into the programme.  The initial oneworld sponsors of Fiji Airways will be all four of oneworld's original founding members - American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.  The Australian carrier will additionally mentor Fiji Airways through its oneworld connect implementation process.

American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Qantas already code-share and have frequent flyer links with Fiji Airways.  British Airways and Fiji Airways are currently discussing areas for potential bilateral cooperation.

What oneworld connect means for customers

oneworld connect partners will provide select alliance benefits to frequent flyers from any oneworld member airline travelling on their flights, with a more extensive range of benefits offered with their oneworld sponsors.

Customers with Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby status in any oneworld member airline's frequent flyer programme will be able to use priority check-in desks, where available.  Also, customers with Emerald or Sapphire status will be offered priority boarding.

The additional benefits offered by oneworld connect partners to customers from their oneworld sponsors and vice versa include:

·      Through check-in of passengers and their baggage for journeys including connections between a connect carrier and any of its oneworld sponsors.

·      The ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer rewards, and earn frequent flyer status points, for eligible flights.  (For customers from oneworld connect airlines, these benefits depend on the oneworld connect partner offering a frequent flyer programme.)

·      Access to select lounges at key airports for First or Business Class passengers or those with eligible top-tier frequent flyer status.

Select other customer benefits may also be offered between oneworld connect partners and their oneworld sponsor airlines.

All oneworld connect partners will make their networks available via Global Explorer, the round-the-world fare offered by all oneworld members and select other airlines.   Fiji Airways already does so.

All oneworld connect partners will be required to maintain IATA IOSA safety certification.

oneworld's regular range of services and benefits remain in place for customers flying with the alliance's full member airlines and their affiliates.

CEOs explain oneworld connect's strategic rationale

oneworld Governing Board Chairman Pekka Vauramo, CEO of Finnair, said: "In the 20 years since oneworld's conception in 1998, global airline alliances have expanded their breadth to the extent that they now account for 60 per cent of total industry revenues and capacity globally, and 70 per cent of revenues between the world's top 125 business city airports.

"With most of the world's biggest airlines already signed up, global airline alliances have reached maturity, In the future, oneworld will target as full members large airlines that have a significant presence in the alliance's prime target market, providing connections between the world's leading business centres.  Meantime, oneworld connect enables us to bring together more airlines to complement the alliance's global leaders, so customers can earn rewards and feel recognised while travelling even further."

oneworld CEO Rob Gurney added: "oneworld's current network of more than 1,000 destinations in 150 plus territories offers far-reaching global coverage, but there are still some regions where we would like to strengthen our presence further.  With fewer potential new candidates available to recruit based on our established membership criteria, oneworld connect enables us to link up with other airlines whose networks are relevant to a subset of our members, who cannot meet oneworld's full membership requirements at this stage or who are not interested in full membership at present.

"This enables us and them to offer our customers more services and benefits across an even wider network and strengthen our relationship going forward, with a streamlined and rapid path to full membership later on where it makes sense for all parties."

Fiji Airways CEO Andre Viljoenstated: "Fiji Airways is thrilled and honoured to be the first oneworld connect partner globally.  We are delighted to link Fiji, and the South Pacific to  the world's premier airline alliance and further deepen our relationships in particular with Qantas, American Airlines, British Airways and Cathay Pacific.  This important step for our airline enables us to offer more services and benefits to our own customers along with the others in the oneworld family, to achieve a greater presence for our airline internationally and to build on the in-bound tourism that is so vital to our home nation and our region."

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said: "As a oneworld founding member, it is great to see the alliance evolve to bring additional benefits to more customers and expand its joint network. We've worked closely with Fiji Airways for many years and are pleased to serve as its mentor as it comes on board as the first oneworld connect partner."

American Airlines Chairman and CEO Doug Parkeradded: "As another oneworld founding member, American Airlines is excited to be playing our part in this latest key development for what has become the world's premier airline alliance, now making access to the South Pacific more attractive than ever."

British Airways Chairman and CEO Alex Cruzstated: "British Airways looks forward to developing links with Fiji Airways as a oneworld connect partner and sponsor, for the benefit of both our airlines, our customers and the wider oneworld community."

Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Officer Rupert Hoggconcluded: "Cathay Pacific was proud to play our part in founding oneworld 20 years ago and establishing it as the leading quality alliance – and we are proud today to be playing our part again in getting this exciting new membership platform oneworld connect off the ground, as a sponsor of our long-term code-share partner Fiji Airways."

Other notable elements of the lounge include a live greenery wall and a constellation of stars on the ceiling representing the Fijian summer and winter skies.

A pay-for-use spa is also available to all guests offering express treatments to guests looking to get a last touch of luxury on their trip. The spa service will also be open to non-lounge guests via an external entrance.

The Fiji Airways Premier Lounge will be open for all Business Class guests and the airline's Tabua Club members travelling on Fiji Airways international flights from Nadi International Airport. Economy Class and other airline passengers can also access the lounge for a small fee of FJD 99 or USD 49.

Fiji Airways flies twice daily from Sydney, daily from Brisbane, twice weekly from Adelaide and five times a week from Melbourne, with onward connections to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Honolulu. The airline also codeshares with Qantas for passengers wishing to travel from other Australian airports. Earlier this month, the airline announced a new direct service between Fiji and Japan.

Bula Adelaide!

Fiji Airways, Fiji’s National Airline, has announced plans to commence twice weekly direct services to Nadi from Adelaide commencing on Friday, June 30, 2017. As well as giving South Australians direct access to Fiji, the new route will also act as a gateway to the United States (Los Angeles and San Francisco) via Nadi.

This marks the fourth Australian leg for the airline after Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Diversifying the Australian market has been a goal of Fiji Airways for some time as so many Australians fly to Fiji every year.

“We’re delighted to launch our fourth Australian route, which will allow us to bring our unique Fijian hospitality to South Australia and will provide an alternative route to the United States via Nadi,” said Andre Viljoen, Managing Director and CEO of Fiji Airways.

“This concludes a great 2016 overall for Fiji Airways with the launch of direct routes to Singapore and San Francisco earlier in the year.”

Hon. Sayed-Khaiyum said the new route couldn’t have come at a better time with Adelaide flights starting just before the second term school holidays in South Australia.

South Australia Tourism Minister, Leon Bignell welcomed the announcement saying Adelaide has welcomed many airlines from around the world and Fiji Airways will provide even more options for visitors travelling to South Australia.

Flights (FJ961/FL960) are now available for sale with return economy airfares starting from AUD799 per person.

Nanuku in full clean-up mode – aiming to host guests from 01 March

Nanuku Auberge Resort Fiji general manager, Mark Stanford has advised while his resort is "a bit of a mess right now" with the resort's gardens and beachfront bearing the brunt of TC Winston over the weekend, the resort has not suffered structural damage and is aiming to be ready to resume full operations as early as 01 March 2016.

Mr Stanford said his first inspection of the resort on Sunday morning with his engineering team revealed extensive damage to the resort's foreshore by huge wind-driven waves and several trees had been uprooted and general foliage and plants flattened.

The bure at the resort's nearby private airstrip was also damaged in the storm

"But apart from some bamboo fencing on the resort, it appears our club house and villas have all escaped structural damage which makes us very lucky indeed," Mr Stanford said.

Having been given advance notice by the Fijian government's meteorological services, Mr Stanford and his well-rehearsed management team took swift action to evacuate guests and ensure all staff were safely with their families before putting the resort under protective wraps as the cyclone bore down on the Pacific Harbour region.

"We are in already in full clean-up mode and we doing all in our power to hopefully be ready to accept our guests and resume full service by 01 March," Mr Stanford said.

Mr Stanford cautioned that while his team is pulling out all the stops, several factors still need to be  taken into account.

"Our staffing levels have been impacted with many of our team having gone home to be with their families and locally sourced supplies will definitely be affected in the short term," he said.

"Most importantly of all, we need to ensure we are able to operate in a completely safe and comfortable environment.

'While this was cyclone was one of the biggest, if not the biggest to ever hit Fiji, the Fijian people are extremely resilient and very used to this type of situation – and no more so than at Nanuku where our staff are once again demonstrating their wonderful spirit in the face of adversary."

Tourism Fiji will lead Green Growth for Tourism Industry

The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism (MITT), Honourable Faiyaz Siddiq Koya has revealed that Tourism Fiji will lead the way to achieve a sustainability conscious tourism industry – that aligns itself with the Fijian Government's Green Growth Framework – to protect the pristine natural environment of Fiji.

Honourable Koya made the announcement during a press conference, the last interactive session between the Minister, tourism industry operators and the media, at the Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE) 2015, which concluded at the Sheraton Fiji Resort in Denarau today.

The Fijian Government in June this year launched the Green Growth Framework, which focuses on rebalancing the three pillars of sustainable development - economic, social, and environment.

The press conference highlighted examples of environmental and sustainability conscious tourism industry operators that are doing well in supporting the vision of 'A better Fiji for all' and taking into consideration the global and regional developments on green growth.

Talanoa Treks, the only dedicated trekking operator that showcases Fiji's beautiful hidden interior and a company founded on the beauty of Fiji's tropical rainforests, pristine rivers, and dramatic peaks, as well as, its rich cultural heritage, environmental and cultural sustainability.

The Mamanuca Environment Society, which has developed a working relationship with stakeholders and provides support for environment and conservation initiatives within the Mamanucas region.

And Nukubati Island Resort (pic above) in Vanua Levu, Nukubati, a Fijian-owned and operated Private Island resort whose conservation efforts include using clean energy, sustainable seafood, and community education.

"The last impression that Fiji and its people leave in the minds of the international buyers, exhibitors and media is a very important one. Therefore, this calls on each individual to regard Fiji as a precious destination," Honourable Koya said.

Honourable Koya noted that despite the fact that globally, the travel industry is perceived to have the highest carbon-footprint, it is  important to recognize the efforts of key industry partners who are taking momentous steps in trying to offset the carbon emissions from tourism-related activities through innovation.

Honourable Koya emphasised that Fiji has real examples of industry partners who have been conscious of the fragile nature of Fiji's natural environment and have already put environmental best practices in place to ensure its sustainability.

"Educating our visitors on the environmental issues affecting our nation begins with you, our international partners. It is our request to you all that when selling Fiji to your clients, you need to make them aware that Fiji has a very delicate ecosystem and whilst they come to enjoy our beautiful country, we would like them to also share the love and appreciation we Fijians have for our natural environment," Honourable Koya added.

New Brand Campaign for Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways launches WELCOME TO OUR HOME Campaign

New brand position captures unique Fijian spirit of friendship and family

Fiji Airways, Fiji’s National Airline, has launched its new brand campaign designed to showcase to the world the warm nature of Fijian hospitality. Called WELCOME TO OUR HOME, it captures the unique Fijian experience travellers have on-board Fiji Airways, and by extension, in Fiji.  This being a very personal, human experience, the familiarity of home, where visitors are treated as extended family, not tourists.
Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Stefan Pichler said: “Treating visitors like family is an inherent quality of Fijians. Our people at Fiji Airways naturally extend this same courtesy to all our guests on board. They are far more than just a seat number, they are part of our extended Fijian family.”
Captured in Fiji, Australia and New Zealand, the campaign launches a series of videos featuring three real families who recently travelled to and from Fiji needing a much-deserved home-away-from-home experience of a lifetime. They were nominated by friends and family back in September.
A once tight-knit family from the suburbs of Sydney, Australia, the Monahan siblings were given the opportunity to reunite after losing their mother and splitting into different homes. Their trip sees them become a single unit honouring their mother's last wishes, and experiencing their first overseas family holiday.
The McConnells are a hardworking dairy family from Hamilton, New Zealand who have had little time to get away on a family holiday because of the demands of running a family farm with 850 cattle.
Elenoa, a Fijian widow from Laucala Beach, Fiji, boarded a plane for the very first time, and ventured to New Zealand to unite with family she had not seen for years.

Their stories are available on ourhome.fijiairways.com
Mr. Pichler added: “Following our successful relaunch to Fiji Airways last year, we have revamped our marketing approach and have now included more of Fiji’s people in the way we market our company and the country overseas. As the national carrier, we want to show off what makes Fiji so special and unique as an experience. This brand position resonates well with the Fijian people because they live this experience every day.
“This also better aligns us with our aim of becoming a leading boutique airline which has a unique, personal touch.”
