IMM Australia Shows Travel Industry Rebound in Full Swing

The travel industry's continuing return to pre-2020 conditions was evident as more than 450 media, PRs and industry leaders attended TravMedia's eleventh annual International Media Marketplace (IMM) Australia at ICC Sydney. Attendees said they were excited about near-normal conditions, and the event saw a year's worth of editorial coverage, media visits and events planned in just one day.

IMM Australia connected 200 Australian and New Zealand travel media with 190 PR professionals representing more than 143 international tourism brands alongside industry leaders. Participants held more than 3,000 prescheduled, one-on-one appointments and attended 4.5 hours of open networking across multiple catered events.

Global delegates shared insights into the best experiences, new hotels and destinations that will entice more people to travel in 2023 and beyond.

“We've been hosting IMM events around the world for more than a decade. We know how difficult the last few years have been due to Covid, but today's event showed that we are almost back to pre-pandemic travel levels,” observed Nick Wayland, TravMedia's CEO & Founder. “From speaking to participants, it is obvious that confidence in the future of travel is high. The buzz in the room was palpable as people connected with old friends and made exciting plans for the year ahead.”

Headline sponsor Expedia Brands (Expedia, Wotif and Stayz) used the occasion to showcase their No-Normal activation, transporting guests to the famous White Lotus hotel in Palermo.

Destination NSW created a Feel New Hotel pop-up for their morning and afternoon tea sponsorship featuring NSW produce, including Bondi Wash skincare, freshly shucked Sydney Rock Oysters and Allie's pressed juices.

Townsville North Queensland surprised guests by launching their 'Up for Unexpected' campaign with a lively performance by The Voice Australia star Trent Bell singing the campaign's signature song. Local characters from Townsville shared their entertaining stories.

The Tourism New Zealand Media Zone allowed attendees to take a moment away from the hustle and bustle in a fern forest with freshly ground Kiwi coffee from Coffee Supreme, which kept energy levels high for scheduled appointments.

Sponsors Spain Tourism Board and Aichi Prefecture provided gift bags and reusable water bottles for media delegates.

The day concluded with an official cocktail party hosted by Merlin Entertainments Group at SEA Life Aquarium, where guests were transported to a magical underwater world and served drinks and canapes while sharks, turtles and colourful fish floated around them. Surprise guests from Madame Tussauds included Liam Hemsworth and Ray Meagher (Alf from Home & Away) in waxwork form, both of whom were popular for selfies.

The day before IMM, the fifth annual TravMedia Summit Australia convened 300 media and industry thought leaders to delve into present and future trends across the industry, including a keynote by one of Australia's most prolific travellers, Getaway Host Catriona Rowntree. Visit Europe was Headline Sponsor, with Crown Sydney hosting the drinks after.
