The Sultanate has experienced a significant growth in the number of visitors, with a 71.2% increase in the number of Australian visitors between 2011 and 2012 alone. Cruise passengers in 2012 rose to over 256,721; this will only increase upon the completion of the dedicated cruise terminal in Muscat Harbour.
With the ongoing development of the tourism infrastructure, expansion of Oman's airports and integrated tourism complexes (ITCs), the Sultanate hopes to increase the share of tourism in the gross domestic product (GDP) to 3 % inline with their Vision 2020. Mona Tannous, Manager, said:
“Oman has made massive investments in the industry and we are working on many different initiatives. A few of the major projects under development are: ITC projects such as the Salalah Beach Complex with the opening of Rotana Villas in 2014; the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC), and the opening of the Alila Resort at Jabal Akhdar in June 2014.”
