In terms of places Australians liked this year, Dublin, Barcelona and Rome all experienced significant growth year on year while Stockholm and Amsterdam rounded out the top five of places that peaked more interest this year than last.
"What this list shows is that as more and more Australians embrace overseas travel we're finally moving past the likes of London. Australians are looking for unique travel experiences that are unlike any destination they've been to previously; this is reflected in the variety of the top five fastest growing destinations we've seen this year," said Barry Brown, Emirates' Divisional Vice President for Australasia.
"With the opening of new routes by Emirates, Australian travellers also have more choice of where to start and end their journey. New destinations have allows Australian travellers to consider alternate starting locations for their river cruise or coach tour of Europe, as well as their own self-guided journeys through a variety of different countries," added Barry Brown.
For 2016, Emirates predicts based on bookings this year that this trend will continue with Munich, Oslo and Bologna expected to be the ones to watch as the top spots for fastest growing destinations in 2016.
"Of course we'll still see Australians experiencing the classics but as we saw this year with the emergence of destinations such as Stockholm and Amsterdam, I think Oslo and Bologna will prove popular in 2016. With one-stop travel with Emirates to 38 destinations in Europe alone, the rest of the world is not so far away anymore," continued Barry Brown.
The other hot trends predicted by Emirates include longer leisure holidays and exploring more than one destination at a time.
"Being able to fly into one destination and out of another for the same price makes it very easy to explore more than just one part of Europe; particularly when you consider our rail partnerships with TGV Air in France and Trenitalia in Italy. Of course with Emirates it's also possible to enjoy a stopover in Dubai which is a completely new experience for many Australians," concluded Barry Brown.
