Sydney Marathon Granted Silver Label Status

Destination NSW has congratulated organisers of the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, after the Sydney Marathon was awarded a Silver Label by the International Association of Athletics Foundations.

Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said, “I applaud the fantastic work by organisers of the Sydney Marathon. They have built the event to a point that it is now being recognised as one of the premier races in the world.”

“We are proud to be a strategic partner in delivering this event.”

IAAF Labels are awarded to races that meet certain criteria, including the organisational standard of the race, course measurement, safety and medical standards, and media services.

“The Sydney Marathon takes places on one of the most stunning courses in the world. It takes in the sights of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, Sydney City, Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens,” Ms Chipchase said.

“This prestigious label will help to attract even more competitors and visitors from around Australia and across the globe and in turn positively impact the NSW economy.”

Blackmores Sydney Running Festival Event Director, Wayne Larden, said achieving the Silver Label was an important milestone for the Sydney Marathon.

“The Blackmores Sydney Marathon will now be officially recognised as a world leader in marathons and promoted to a very large number of potential participants. We will see a big increase in participation in future years, and the economic impact for NSW will be substantial,” Mr Larden said.

“We are grateful for the strategic partnership with Destination NSW, which enabled us to bring some of the world’s best marathon runners to the event last year and secure the live national and international television broadcast. This was important in helping us achieve the status of an IAAF Silver Label Marathon. We are now aiming to go one better to achieve the premier accolade of being recognised as an IAAF Gold Label Marathon.”

Athletics Australia, CEO, Dallas O’Brien said, “Receiving Silver Label status is a testament to the strength of the event for the world’s governing body of athletics to bestow upon the Sydney Marathon the sought-after Silver Label status.”

“Only a limited number of events around the globe can ever achieve this status and this international recognition can only help in further boosting the already high calibre of athletes who travel to Australia to compete in the Sydney Marathon.”

This year, the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival will be held on Sunday 21 September, and includes the Blackmores Sydney Marathon, Blackmores Half Marathon, Blackmores Bridge Run and The Sunday Telegraph Family Fun Run.
