In a powerful display of resilience and defiance, the Australian National Maritime Museum's signature summer program, 'The Beach', has opened its doors, inviting Australians to reconnect with the nation's cherished coastal traditions and reaffirm the values of kindness, care, and community.
"The Beach invites us all to come together – gently - to reconnect with the coastal rituals that shape Australian life with the shoreline's spirit of welcome, play and shared stories," said Ms Daryl Karp AM, Director and CEO of the Australian National Maritime Museum.
The immersive exhibition and playscape, featuring works by renowned artists such as Anne Zahalka, Max Dupain, and Ken Done, transforms the museum's Lighthouse Gallery into a vibrant celebration of beach life, inviting visitors to rediscover the joy and sense of belonging that comes with sharing the shoreline.
"Since the horror of the 14th of December, we have had a great deal of discussion about continuing," Ms Karp said. "We decided to continue, showcasing our beaches as places of connection and belonging. The shoreline has always been a place where we all meet – just open skies and shared sand – it belongs to us all, a place of joy, togetherness and shared fun."
The Beach program includes a range of events and activities designed to foster connection and community, including babies' hour, family workshops, theatre performances, and life drawing.
The exhibition runs until February 1, offering a timely reminder of the importance of respect, inclusion, and care in reclaiming the beach as a safe and welcoming space for all Australians.
