Mount Lofty House celebrates 40 years of hotel operations

Historic Adelaide Hills hotel Mount Lofty House will mark 40 years of hotel operations on 12 February 2026 with the launch of a commemorative two-night package, the Iconic 40th Escape.

The adults-only retreat, located on Adelaide's highest summit, was originally built as a summer house in 1852 by Arthur and Martha Hardy. The property was destroyed during the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires and subsequently rebuilt, reopening as an eight-room luxury hotel on 12 February 1986 amid surrounding national parkland.

In 2009, the property was acquired from the Accor Hotels Group by South Australian hotelier David Horbelt. Since then, the estate has undergone further development under Horbelt and business partner Malcolm Bean, with a focus on preserving the character of the original Hardy residence while expanding its hospitality offering.

Today, Mount Lofty House forms part of the broader Mount Lofty Estate, which includes Hardy's Verandah Restaurant, a day spa, landscaped gardens and historic cellar facilities. The property operates as an adults-only retreat approximately 30 minutes' drive from Adelaide International Airport.

To coincide with the anniversary, the Iconic 40th Escape will be offered as a limited two-night stay incorporating 40 Signature Inclusions across dining, spa and estate experiences. The package includes a $140 dining credit, a $40 spa credit, night-time turndown treats and a late departure, among other inclusions.
