Love Boat Captain Shares Tips for Romance Before He Sails Down Under
As the countdown to Valentine’s Day gets underway, one of the best known Captains of Romance, the Love Boat’s Captain Merrill Stubing, is dusting off his famous uniform to bring his unique brand of love Down Under.
In a cheeky YouTube video that combines the spirit of the iconic 70s show with sage 21st century advice, Captain Stubing - aka actor Gavin MacLeod - can be seen sporting a rose between his teeth for a romantic selfie as he shares his personal tips to help couples of all ages chart their way through the sea of love. View the video here
The launch of the video coincides with the announcement that the 82-year-old Love Boat Captain will be making a special visit to Australia on February 7-8 to oversee a romantic vow renewal ceremony on a Princess Cruises’ Love Boat, Sun Princess, before setting sail to New Zealand to preside over another ceremony in Auckland on February 12.

Gavin, a veteran actor who will tomorrow receive the Golden Palm Star at The Palm Springs Walk of Stars, has starred with scores of beautiful Hollywood women during his career.
But according to Gavin, the most beautiful woman he’s ever come across is his wife Patti: “She’s so beautiful I married her twice!” he says.
While Gavin concedes there are many different views on love today, he offers advice from someone who’s “been there - and done that” with tips to keep the love alive in 2014 and beyond, including:
- the power of a man in uniform (preferably a Captain’s uniform)
- the risk that mobile phones present to romance
- the lure of a good dance move to shimmy your way into someone’s heart
- the charm of a man who’s manly enough to embrace “Chick Lit”
- the magnetism of a man who can handle a beater to whip up some cookies sprinkled with love.
Regarded as a catalyst for the cruising boom, The Love Boat TV series cruised through 10 seasons from 1977 to 1986 and is still in syndication in 92 countries worldwide including Australia.
The show’s stories centred on the ship’s crew, led by the charming Captain, with celebrities playing guest roles and Princess Cruises’ passengers cast as extras. The scores of stars who appeared on the show include Joan Collins, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Michael J Fox, Joan Rivers and The Village People.
Gavin’s visit Down Under will only be his second visit to Australia and New Zealand since the Love Boat recorded a special two-hour episode in Sydney in 1981.
Princess Cruises’ fleet now consists of 17 ships, including three which are based in Australia - Sun Princess, Dawn Princess and Sea Princess.
Love Boat fans can follow news of Gavin’s visit Down Under via Princess Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/PrincessCruises and on Twitter @princesscruises using the hashtag #loveboatdownunder. Gavin’s video can be found at http://tinyurl.com/lqxm4pa

Olympic gold medallist Sarah Ulmer joins the pack for 10th Motatapu Adventure Race
New Zealand Olympic cycling gold medallist Sarah Ulmer is the latest athlete confirmed for the Motatapu Icebreaker Off-Road Marathon to be held March 8 in Queenstown and Wanaka.
With just two weeks to go until entries close, 37-year-old Ulmer said she entered the iconic race “as an excuse to come to paradise” and the chance to win “a fantastic $10,000 prize pack”.
Speaking on a recent visit to Queenstown to check out the latest developments on the Queenstown Trails – the Trails Trust is the new owner of the Motatapu - Ulmer said she always loved coming to the resort town.
“The Motatapu is such a special event. It’s so unique because you can only access the amazing scenery and course just one day a year.”
This will be Ulmer’s third time competing in the race, as she previously entered the marathon and the Arrowtown.com 15km Miners Trail.
“I encourage anyone thinking about entering to just do it. Enter, then enjoy and embrace it. This is a once a year – and for some - a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she said.
- Sarah Ulmer discusses tactics with race manager Gemma Boyle
“It’s a great race and a cool experience just being surrounded by like-minded people for a day - smelling, hearing and absorbing all the things around you on the day.”
“It also doesn’t hurt that anyone who enters the event automatically goes in the draw to win a huge prize pack of goodies including a Scott Spark 720 bike. Nice, I’d be happy to win that.”
The 10 year anniversary prize pack winner will be announced on February 13 after entries close. The prize includes; a Scott Spark 720 bike, Giro helmet, Topeak pack and tools, Smith sunglasses, Icebreaker Tech T and Socks, an Osprey hydration pack, Marmot jacket, two nights at the Hilton Queenstown, a Jet boat trip with KJet, a 15,000ft Skydive with NZONE and to top it all off a VW to drive around in for a week.
Queenstown Trails Trust CEO Mandy Kennedy said attracting someone of Sarah’s calibre is testimony to the profile the race has gained over the past decade.
“This is our tenth year and it’s shaping up to have a fantastic array of elite athletes, return competitors and first timers who have set the race as a personal “bucket list” must do,” she said.
“Having Sarah compete is just wonderful. She’s a perfect example of someone entering to enjoy the race and embrace the event, using it as an opportunity to grab some friends, immerse yourself in the fantastic Motatapu scenery and experience Queenstown with all it has to offer.
“It’s still not too late to enter and entries for all categories close February 12 2014, bar the mountain bike which closed in record time last year.”
Ms Ulmer said she hadn’t trained specifically for the event but had some personal tips for fellow competitors.
“I certainly would do some off-road training beforehand, train with a camel pak so you know what that feels like and get yourself into some rivers. I loved the river crossings, they were awesome, they keep you cool,” she said.
“I’d encourage some wine training too, you know for when the race is over and you can enjoy that well deserved glass of something local.
“I’m certainly not in it to win it and haven’t set myself a finish time. I’ll be chatting to people on the way, providing encouragement and enjoying the day.”
Entries for the Speight’s Summit Mountain Bike category closed in record time but there is still availability for the Icebreaker Off-Road Marathon, Arrowtown.com 15km Miners Trail, and XTERRA UDC Finance Triathlon events.
Entries can be completed online at http://www.motatapu.org.nz/ and strictly close on February 12 2014.

Outrigger acquires two Fiji properties
“This acquisition is consistent with the strategic growth of Outrigger in the Asia-Pacific region,” said David Carey, president and chief executive officer of Outrigger Enterprises Group. “With over 66 years of experience in tropical resort destinations, our full acquisition of these two beautiful, absolute beachfront properties fits perfectly with our expansion strategies. We plan to have Outrigger resorts in the best beachfront locations in the best resort destinations in the Asia-Pacific region,” he added.
Since starting its expansion into the Asia-Pacific region in 2008, Outrigger has grown its global presence to include properties currently open or under development in Australia; Guam; Bali; Phuket and Phi Phi Island, Thailand; Mauritius; Hainan Island, China; and Vietnam.
Mr. Shaw will continue as a consultant to Outrigger. “We have enjoyed a long working relationship with Geoff and look forward to utilizing his expertise as a consultant as Outrigger continues to work with the Fijian community to welcome visitors to the islands,” Mr. Carey said.

Construction of the resort commenced in late 1998, with Mr. Shaw’s company overseeing the hotel’s development. Outrigger purchased a minority interest during the construction stage and provided extensive technical support throughout the development period. The resort opened on October 1, 2000, and today is branded the Outrigger on the Lagoon • Fiji.
According to Mr. Carey, Mr. Shaw has been instrumental in the property’s success over the past thirteen years. He obtained the necessary government approvals and community consent to redevelop the site into his vision of a unique Fijian waterfront village, combining individual bungalow ‘bure’ and hotel room accommodations set amongst lush tropical vegetation. The herculean task included moving a portion of the Queen’s Highway, the main road between Nadi and the capital city of Suva, and transplanting
250,000 tropical plants and trees. Today, individual bures set amongst the gardens and beachside along the water’s edge, together with modern low-rise hotel rooms and suites, swimming pools, multiple restaurants and a wide range of recreational facilities, combine with the genuine hospitality of the Fijians to deliver a unique guest experience.

This private island resort, which boasts an annual 44% guest returnee rate, offers two fresh water swimming pools, four restaurants and bars, a wide range of water sports and activities including PADI scuba diving, surfing, and a renowned kids club.
Operations of both Outrigger on the Lagoon • Fiji and Castaway Island will be overseen by the Outrigger Asia-Pacific team from its regional offices in Phuket, Thailand. “We are excited to have both of these outstanding resorts in our portfolio.
