This journey is now possible through a combined effort of experienced, guides, drivers, and travel support staff. Most bikers choose to arrive in Tibet via air, daily flights serve Lhasa from a variety of Chinese cities and flights from Kathmandu arrive at least 3 times a week! Before setting off on the adventure, TCTS arranges for sightseeing in Lhasa while bikers acclimatize to the altitude.
Comfortable tourist hotels will be arranged for the trip and camping equipment like tents and sleeping bags are provided on portions of tour where it is necessary to camp. Those who bike Tibet are in for magnificent landscapes, opportunities for learning about Tibetan Culture, and an overwhelming sense of satisfaction when they finally arrive in Kathmandu.
The biking tour begins in Lhasa. Travelers will visit place like Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, along with Sera and Drepung Monasteries while they acclimatize to the altitude. Bikers are encouraged to keep physical activity light and drink lots of water in preparation for the strenuous adventure ahead. After acclimatizing, the biking tour of Tibet begins! Within the first couple days, the tour passes Lake Yamdrok and makes stops in Gyantse and Shigatse for sightseeing. After several days on the road bikers will reach Rongbuk Monastery, located near the base of Everest it is the highest monastery in the world! Bikers will spend the night here and wake up early for early morning views of Mt. Everest (weather permitting). After Everest, it’s another few days to Tibet’s border with Nepal where the group’s Nepali guide will join in and accompany bikers to Kathmandu.
This truly epic Tibet tour takes dedicated bikers through high altitude Tibetan towns and villages, giving them a window into every day Tibetan life that most tourists miss out on. Bikers have more time to appreciate the sights than those riding in a vehicle and cover much more ground than those on a trekking tour! With TCTS, the itinerary is flexible enough to allow bikers to move at their own pace; a support vehicle follows in case anyone needs a break from peddling. From TCTS’s experience April-Mid May along with September-October are the best times to embark on this journey (these are also the best times for catching a glimpse of Everest). With availability filling up quickly, bikers are encouraged to begin planning their adventure soon.
