Australians prefer home comforts according to Expedia

Aussies are increasingly choosing to travel in their own backyard, with Western Australia predicted to be the year's most popular destination, according to Expedia.com.au.

New research conducted by the world's largest online travel company shows that Perth is expected to draw the highest number of domestic travellers – particularly for short breaks – following on from strong traveller demand in 2012.

Hobart, the picturesque waterfront capital of Tasmania, and iconic wilderness destination Cradle Mountain are also anticipated to be popular tourist destinations in 2013, after travel demand (booked flights and hotels) grew over 85% during 2012.

Amee Evans, Expedia travel expert, said: "It's exciting to see domestic destinations like Perth and Hobart increasing in popularity with local tourists. Whilst these two locations are often perceived as expensive, hot deals on flights and hotels leave you with more cash to spend when you arrive."

"Another trend that's expected to continue to grow this year is around package holidays, which are increasingly popular with travellers to resort destinations like Samoa, Koh Samui and Hawaii. Travellers are cottoning on to combining hotels and flights as a great way to save money, and the fact you can pick and choose your hotel and flight with Expedia means you are not tied into a traditional rigid package with these items locked in for you," said Amee.

·         Escaping the summer: Aussies looking to escape the heat in December and January may choose to visit Japan, which experienced more than 70% year-on-year growth in traveller demand since 2012.

·         Travelling solo: Mexico is proving popular with solo travellers, many of whom are combining their visit south-of-the-border with a stop-over in the USA. Over 95% of trips to Mexico booked on Expedia.com.au in 2012 were from people travelling by themselves. Cancun, Los Cabos and Riviera Maya are the country's fastest growing destinations among Australians.

·         Package lovers: One of the most popular destinations for Australians is Thailand, particularly Koh Samui, a popular honeymoon destination. A large portion of Expedia bookings to Koh Samui in 2012 were in the form of packages.
