A new dinner cruise experience is now operating on the Thu Bon River, offering visitors to Hoi An an opportunity to combine dining, river scenery and local cultural storytelling in a single evening.
The Merchant River Cruise, operated by Namia River Retreat, departs from the resort's private pier and follows a 2.5-hour route along the Thu Bon River, passing riverside communities and offering views of the UNESCO-listed Hoi An Ancient Town at sunset.
Inspired by Hoi An's history as a trading port, the experience combines a five-course dinner with themes drawn from the region's historic spice trade routes. Menus feature local ingredients, seafood from Vietnam's central coast, organic herbs and sustainably sourced produce.
Guests begin the journey with cocktails and canapés on the vessel's upper deck before dining in the main saloon as the cruise travels downstream. Cultural interpretation highlighting Hoi An's maritime history is incorporated throughout the voyage.
The cruise is available in several package options, including beverage-inclusive experiences and vegetarian menus. Guests can also extend their evening with post-cruise drinks at The Merchant Riverside Restaurant.
In addition to scheduled departures, the vessel is available for private charter, catering for weddings, celebrations, corporate functions and wellness-focused events.
The Merchant River Cruise expands the guest experiences offered by Namia River Retreat, a wellness-focused luxury resort located on the banks of the Thu Bon River. Since opening in late 2024, the resort has attracted visitors seeking accommodation, wellness programmes and cultural experiences within easy reach of Hoi An's historic centre.
Why the Thu Bon River Matters
For centuries, the Thu Bon River served as the commercial lifeline of Hoi An, connecting merchants from China, Japan, India and Europe with one of Southeast Asia's most important trading ports. Today, the river remains central to the city's identity, providing visitors with a different perspective on Hoi An's heritage, landscapes and local communities.
