Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa is officially one of New Zealand's top performing 'green' business operators, earning an Enviro Gold award this week from the nation's official quality assurance system, Qualmark.
Introduced in 2008, Qualmark™ Green assesses and rates tourism operators on environmental performance. High achieving businesses carrying a Qualmark™ Enviro logo are assessed on their environmental performance with Enviro Awards (Bronze, Silver or Gold) given to top performers in five key action areas pertaining to waste management, water conservation and community and conservation initiatives.
Sofitel Queenstown received its first Enviro Gold Award from Qualmark in 2011. Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa General Manager Vincent Macquet said the hotel was very proud to have again earned Qualmark's highest ranking environmental ranking in 2014.
"I'm pleased to say that the Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa is not only one of New Zealand's most exclusive hotels, but importantly we are now officially also one of the most environmentally responsible hotels taking care of our destination for future generations of travelers.
"Sofitel has always made the environment a priority, and it's a consideration in everything we do at the hotel," he said. "In Queenstown, we're privileged to live aside some of the world's most amazing scenery with the great outdoors on our doorstep and this in itself provides daily inspiration to spur us on to achieve our green goals.
"That said, it's always wonderful for the hotel team to reflect and receive formal recognition from the industry for the diligent work we do in respect to sustainability, and we're very grateful for this most recent award."
Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa's Enviro Gold Award is the latest environmental accolade for the Accor Hotels network, and reflects the values of Accor's worldwide sustainable development program, PLANET 21.
With PLANET 21, Accor and its many hotels and brands across the globe have made 21 commitments to act together for the well-being of the world. These commitments span a range of issues and have associated targets for the year 2015, including a 15% reduction in water consumption, a 10% decrease in energy use and carbon emissions and a total ban on endangered seafood such as shark's fin.
